Top 3 Reasons Why People Love Cafes Beyond Coffee

Building Passion Coffee Cups

Trust us, it’s not just the caffeine that keeps you coming back.

Ever wondered why people love hanging out at cafes? Why people are willing to spend more than a hundred Pesos to get their daily dose of caffeine? Or why coffee shops dot almost every corner of the metro?

Here are the facts: Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, next to oil. Coffee provides jobs for 25 million farmers, mostly in equatorial countries a.k.a. the ‘coffee belt’.  Over 500 billion cups are consumed every year. And it’s a $100 billion dollar industry (You read that right, 100 BILLION DOLLARS).

OK, we get it. The world can’t seem to get enough of coffee. And as the demand grows, more coffee shops are popping up to satisfy this insatiable need. Mystery solved.

But as it turns out, there’s more to cafes than meets the eye. We dug deeper and found out three reasons why people love cafes beyond coffee:

3. The ‘Third Place’

In an average week, where do you go aside from home and your workplace? According to sociologist Ray Oldenburg, people crave for a ‘third place’, a place where they can spend time between home (the first place) and work (the second place). Building Passion Coffee Place These are common spaces where people can unwind, interact, or just kill time. Parks, clubhouses, salons, and gyms are just a few examples of the third places. But coffee shops seem to be a top favorite because they satisfy almost all the criteria of a perfect ‘third place’ : welcoming and comfortable, presence of food and drink, highly accessible, and visited by old and new friends. Imagine the FRIENDS gang hanging out at their usual couch in Central Perk. That’s a classic third place scenario.

2. The Creative Space

Building Passion Coffee SpaceWhen you have to prepare a presentation or beat a writing deadline, why do you feel more productive in a café? According to a study by the University of Chicago, “A moderate level of ambient noise is conducive to creative cognition.” So being alone in a quiet room might not be the best place to get the creative juices flowing. Cafes, on the other hand, provide the right amount of noise and activity to stimulate your brain. The creative side of your brain doesn’t like it when it’s too quiet – it needs just the right amount of distraction to get things going. So the next time you get stumped on a project, see if working at your local coffee shop will do the trick.

1. The Watering Hole

In the jungle, all the animals tend to huddle around the watering hole where they can drink water and socialize. It’s the same with us Homo sapiens sapiens. Throw in coffee (and its various permutations of hot, cold, and blended), desserts and pastries, comfy couches and plush armchairs, dim lighting, perfect room temperature, piped in music, plus social interaction and you get the modern day equivalent of a watering hole for human beings. Coffee shops are also the perfect spot to meet, whether for a short business meeting or catching up with friends. But when you’re with good company and fueled by caffeine and sweets, prepare to spend a few hours inside a café.
