Asian Breast Center opens modern treatment facility in Centuria Medical Makati

The Philippines’ first freestanding, profit-for-charity breast cancer center adheres to US protocols and uses the latest equipment

A warm, comfortable and contemporary space distinguishes the unique healing environment at Asian Breast Center (ABC), one which speaks a lot about its modern approach to treatment, and its advocacy of  early detection, prevention and breast conservation.

The profit-for-charity ABC opened its doors late last year at the 8th floor of Centuria Medical Makati to the warm reception of the high society, health community and breast cancer awareness advocates. The 320-square-meter facility is fitted with a welcoming and spacious waiting area, consultation rooms, diagnostic rooms, an operating room and recovery units.

As the ABC strictly adheres to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network’s (NCCN) guidelines, patients are assured that they are getting the same quality and standard of care as when they go to leading breast cancer hospitals in the US. Topnotch treatment is provided by ABC’s team of doctors headed by Dr. Norman San Agustin, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Founder and President of Morristown Surgical Associates at the Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey, United States.

The center prides itself as a fully equipped, one-stop specialty unit for the management of breast conditions. It provides holistic, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary approach to breast care including prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment. Among the services offered are consultation, medical oncology, radiation oncology, minor breast surgeries, breast reconstruction, digital mammography, breast ultrasound as well as scintigraphy and biopsy.

ABC also offers the latest breast cancer therapy for early stages that’s not yet available elsewhere in the Philippines. One of these is the Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT), an advanced breast cancer treatment for stage 0 to 1. Unlike other radiation therapies that radiate the whole breast and take about 33 treatments over several weeks, IORT is done only once at the time of lumpectomy and targets mainly the specific area where the cancer is. When the patient wakes up from surgery, the radiation therapy is completed, and she may get back to work in a few days.

For diagnosis, the center has the Molecular Breast Imaging machine that can accurately detect cancer even on dense breasts which are common among Asian women.  It also uses ultrasound equipment and an advanced digital mammography system that allows a wide variety of breast procedures with minimal discomfort to the patient.
